I planned on getting wheels and tires next go round, but I’ll need tires before I can afford both. These are pretty cheap price wise, but how cheap are they at everything else?

Probably just get the best tires you can afford. They’re the only thing in touch with the road. Unless you’re unlucky ....

I have the ecsta ast. They’ve need solid and wearing nicely. Made it through a couple winters on them and still lots of tread, about 10k miles on them. I’m not gentle either. Not sure if their softer rubbers are any good though.

Lucky. I had two sets of ASTs on my smart, they were the worst tyres my car has ever had. They wore out hilariously quickly, had no wet traction, and were downright unsafe in the snow.
Just food for thought for the OP, tyres react differently on different cars. What may work for someone else may be a disaster for you.

Different for different cars for sure! What happened to yours? Balance/alignment problems, besides the traction?

Oh yeah - a light dusting of snow and I was just sliding down the road crown when stopped. We usually only get some rain though.

No idea, although I heard BFG’s G-Force Sport Comp 2 are pretty fun after seeing Desu-San-Desu maintain a set on his Cooper S (supercharged, not turbo). They’re grippy in most weather but durable enough for him to have 3 days of mountain driving-fun with me, two other Miatas, and Rainbow’s Escort with no tire issues. Treadwear is something like 340 AA or so.
There’s also an A/S version of the Sport Comp 2 with 400 AA trearwear, it’s not as grippy but seems to be well-liked after reviews.

The M3 had almost new one of those or very similar (they were kuhmo ecstas, not sure on the model number) and they were total shit. I’m talking the no-names I bought to replace them were better in pretty much every regard.
0/10 would avoid

They aren’t available in my size. I’m probably going with RE50A’s again. I like them, other than their treadwear.

That’s a bummer! I know they’ve been a hot buy as of late, I guess with winter coming A/Ss and less-sporty tires are where the money’s at. Last attempt: Dunlop DZ102s . 460AA treadware but they’re good DD tires. Least amount of traction from my suggestions but still better than A/Ss.

Not in my size either. 205/40r17 is apparently a strange size.

I’ll be there, probably with pops in his dark-grey ‘08 Mustang.

I will be in a nasty Fiesta, because I’ve given up on cleaning it at the moment. Or if I’m really feeling brave, the Slowrunner.

I would also consider the Kumho Ecsta 4X II's, if they come in your size. I have had two sets on my old DD 2000 Miata, and will get a third set when they wear out for my new DD 2001 Miata. My Ecsta 4X I's made it up a mountain road through about 2-3 inches of snow when they were all down near the wear bars. I enjoy the slightly-softer sidewall, but just add a little more PSI in the fronts to make the turn-in quicker. With gentle breakaway too? I'm in.
